Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her aunt Denise. The aunt she had was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay immediately became enthralled with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's examples of how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself by means of artwork. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the historic civil right's march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash of one of members of the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalistic work by the assignments she was assigned and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
